What Is Enhanced Conversions?

Also written as enhanced conversions for web, hashed conversions, enhanced conversion tracking.

Definition

Enhanced conversions is a Google Ads setting that sends a hashed (scrambled) copy of the buyer's email with the sale. Google can then match orders the browser tag missed. For an ecommerce store, this recovers sales that Safari and ad blockers hide. Smart Bidding then sees more of what actually sold.

Enhanced Conversions, Explained

The browser tag is easy to block. iPhone Safari cuts cookies short. Ad blockers strip the tag. A sale still happens on your store, but Google Ads never hears about it. Enhanced conversions fills that hole with first-party data you already have from checkout: a hashed email, and sometimes a hashed phone or address. Google matches that hash to a signed-in Google user and credits the click.

It does not replace the tag. It sits on top of it. You still need a working purchase conversion with the real order value. Enhanced conversions only helps Google attach that conversion to the right click when the cookie is gone.

The mistake is turning it on and assuming tracking is now complete. It is not. A hashed email only helps when the shopper paid with an email Google can match. Pair it with server-side tracking so the sale leaves your store's server, not the shopper's browser. Then compare Google Ads conversions to Shopify orders. A leftover gap is a tracking problem, not a bidding problem.

How We Use It at ZenoX

On the 200+ ecom accounts we run, enhanced conversions is part of the tracking setup, not a later extra. We turn it on with the purchase tag and add server-side tracking. We do not scale until a test order shows up with the right value. We still read Shopify as the money source when the shop is connected.

Questions People Ask About Enhanced Conversions

What Are Enhanced Conversions in Google Ads?

They send a hashed email (and sometimes other checkout details) with the purchase so Google can match a sale the browser tag missed. The hash is one-way, so the raw email is not sitting in the ad account. For a store, this is how you recover a chunk of iPhone and ad-blocker sales that pixel-only setups lose.

Do I Still Need the Google Ads Tag If I Use Enhanced Conversions?

Yes. Enhanced conversions rides on a working purchase conversion. It does not create the conversion on its own. Keep one primary purchase action with the real order value, then add enhanced conversions on top. If you can, also send the sale from your store's server so Safari cannot block it.
