Learn Google Ads from Zero: Your Path and Where to Train

Six steps in order. One table of five places to train, with what each one is bad at.

  • About 12 minutes to read
  • For anyone starting from zero

How Do You Learn Google Ads from Zero?

To learn Google Ads, start with how the auction works. Then take one Skillshop course. Then run one small real campaign and read your data. Our view: your own data teaches you more than another video. Skillshop is the place to start because Google runs it and it costs nothing (checked 5 November 2026). Then pick where you get feedback.

This page gives you six steps in order and one table of five places to train, including what each one is bad at. Anyone can use it. The examples come from a store selling products, because that is what we run.

One thing to weigh: ZenoX runs the Google Ads eCom Lab and owns the four-hour video in the table. The Lab is for people selling products online.

The order

What Order Should You Learn Google Ads In?

Learn the auction first, then the campaign types. Take one Skillshop course. Set a budget you can lose. Run one real campaign on one product. Then read your data and get a second pair of eyes. Each step makes the next one easier.

Run a store? Your next stop after step 6 is the store guide. It starts where this path ends. Want to watch a full build first? Chris's four-hour video is free to watch on YouTube.

  1. Step 1

    1. Learn the Auction and Ad Rank's 6 Factors

Do: Learn how Google picks which ads show. A score sets the order of ads (Ad Rank). It is "based on 6 factors". Three are your bid, your ad and page quality, and the minimum score to show. The fourth is how tough the auction is. The fifth is the details of the search, like the words, place and device (search context). The sixth is how much the extra parts of your ad should help (expected impact of ad assets and formats). Why: Google says "It's not like an art auction where the highest bidder always wins". The auction also runs again on every search. Done when: You can tell a friend why a lower bid can win a higher spot.

    How Google Ads works >
  2. Step 2

    2. Learn Campaign Types and Match Types

Do: Learn four campaign types. Search shows "text ads on search results". Shopping shows your products. Performance Max (PMax) is one campaign across Google's channels. Demand Gen runs on places like YouTube, Discover and Gmail. Then learn how close a search must be to your keyword (match types). There are three. "Broad match is the default match type". Phrase uses quotes. Exact uses square brackets. Why: Each campaign type does a different job. Pick the job first and the settings after. Done when: You can name the right campaign type for one product and write one keyword in all three match types.

    The beginner guide >
  3. Step 3

    3. Take One Skillshop Course, Not Five

Do: Selling products? Take AI-Powered Shopping ads (1h 15m, marked Beginner). Anything else? Take the Search course (3h 40m, marked Intermediate). It has a section called "Understand the Google Ads Auction". Skillshop showed those times on 5 November 2026. Why: Five courses feel like progress, but they give you zero data of your own. One course gives you the words. Done when: You finish one course and stop. No second course yet.

    Open Skillshop >
  4. Step 4

    4. Set a Budget You Can Afford to Lose

Do: Pick a daily number you could lose in full. Multiply it by 30.4. That is Google's monthly limit, for most campaigns, checked 5 November 2026. Why: Your first money buys data. If losing it would hurt, you may panic and change things too early. Done when: The daily number and the monthly limit are written down, and neither one scares you.

What the ads will cost you >
  5. Step 5

    5. Run One Real Campaign on One Product

Do: Pick one product. Sell a service? Pick one service. Build one campaign for it. Set up tracking first, so you can see what each click did. Why: With one product, every click points at one thing. That makes your first data easier to read. Done when: Your ads run, real people click, and you can see clicks and sales for that one product.

Set up your first campaign >
  6. Step 6

    6. Read Your Search Terms and Get a Second Pair of Eyes

Do: Open your search terms report. It shows what people really typed. Find terms that have nothing to do with your product. Block them, so your ads stop showing on those terms (negative keywords). Then show the account to someone who will tell you the truth. Why: Your own search terms show which clicks went to the wrong people. A second person can catch what you miss. Done when: You added negatives from your own data, and one outside person pushed back on something.

    Where to get feedback >

A store example

Learn PPC on One Product: A Store Example

PPC means pay per click. One product is a clean way to learn it, because you can follow one search from start to finish. The keyword, the ad and the product page should all match. If one breaks, the wrong person clicks or the right person leaves.

This example is made up. No real client, no real results. Picture a small store that sells one ceramic pour-over coffee dripper.

Someone types "ceramic pour over coffee dripper" into Google. They want to buy that thing. Your keyword fits. Your ad says ceramic pour-over dripper. The link opens that exact product page, with the price in view. All three match.

Someone else types "how to clean a coffee dripper". Depending on your match type, your ad can still show. They click for a tip. They were never going to buy. When you pay by the click (cost-per-click bidding), that click still costs money.

Made-up searches for a made-up store. This shows the method, not a result.
  • Shopping Works a Bit Differently

Shopping ads show a picture and a price. They need your product data, sent to Google (a Merchant Center feed). You write no keywords there. Google matches searches to your product data, so your product title does the job a keyword does in Search.

Your first campaign buys data. Read it, cut the wrong clicks, then spend more.

Budget

How Much Money Do You Need to Practice?

Use money you can lose in full. Google's own example is $10 a day, checked 5 November 2026. That can reach $20 on one day. The month stays capped at $304, for most campaigns.

A rough sum shows what $304 could buy. WordStream's 2026 search ads report covers 13,474 US search ad campaigns in 23 industries, from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026. Its Shopping, Collectibles & Gifts category shows a typical $4.14 a click (median). There, 4.01% of clicks became a lead or other tracked action (conversion rate).

$304 / $4.14 = about 73 clicks. At 4.01%, that is about 3 conversions. Treat that as plain arithmetic on US search numbers. Nobody can forecast your result from it. The report leaves out Shopping ads and Performance Max. Its conversions are not store sales.

Chris has a bigger number for one case: a new feed-only Performance Max in euros. In his four-hour video he calls about €10 a day "too small". His words: "50 is the minimum." That is his view, not a Google rule. €50 x 30.4 = €1,520 a month.

Our view: if €1,520 a month is out of reach, do not start with that campaign. Go back to step 5 and keep it small.

Certification

Do You Need a Google Ads Certification to Get Started?

Our view: no. You need practice. A certification proves you passed a test. It does not prove you can read a live account. Google's own page says "We recommend that you have on-the-job experience using Google Ads."

Google's main ones cover Search, Display, Video, Shopping and Apps. Skillshop also lists others, such as Measurement.

Our view again: take it once you have run step 5. The questions make more sense after you have seen real data. Take it sooner if a job asks for it.

QuestionAnswer
What does it cost?No cost
How long is the test?75 minutes. You cannot pause the timer
What score passes?80%
What if you fail?Retake it one day later

Bad lessons

Three Things Beginners Get Taught Wrong

Old blog advice sticks around long after Google changes the rules. Three of those lessons still trip up beginners, and Google's own words fix all three.

  • Quality Score Sets Your Price

Not true. Google says Quality Score is "not an input in the ad auction". It calls it "a diagnostic tool". It is a 1-10 rating on keywords in Search campaigns. Ad quality still counts at auction time. The score only reports on it. So ignore any formula that multiplies your bid by it.

  • Exact Match Means Word for Word

Not anymore. Exact match now covers "the same meaning or same intent". It still "gives you the most steering over who views your ad". You still need to read your search terms.

  • Every Campaign Bills by the Click

Some do not. Display can bill per 1,000 viewable views. Google also says "Google Display Ads campaigns are moving to Demand Gen". So do not build your learning around Display.

Our Lab

Who Is the Lab For, and Who Should Skip It?

We run the Google Ads eCom Lab, so weigh this with that in mind. It is for people selling products online, on Shopify. Standard is $9 a month and opens 13 of the 18 courses, read 5 November 2026.

Inside are 18 courses and 196 lessons in a set order. On Standard you get a daily Q&A thread. Members help each other, and our staff join in when they can. Premium at $75 a month and Inner Circle at $299 a month are optional. Premium adds media buyers who answer inside 24 hours on weekdays.

It has 5.0 from 29 reviews on Skool, read 5 November 2026. We promise no results. Your product and your work decide those.

#1 Google Ads Community on Skool: #1 of 271 groups when you search google ads on Skool (5 November 2026). That is Skool's own search order, not size. Bigger Google Ads groups exist on Skool.

  • Wrong Pick: You Sell Calls, Bookings or Leads

The Lab is not built for you. It is about selling products. Start with Skillshop, then read the Google Ads Skool page.

  • Wrong Pick: Your Store Is Not on Shopify

The courses are built for Shopify. A lot of the feed and tracking setup will not match your store.

  • Wrong Pick: You Want Someone to Run Your Ads

The Lab teaches. It does not run your account. Our agency does that, and it starts at EUR 20,000 a month in ad spend. Below that, keep learning.

Learning Google Ads FAQ

Questions People Ask Before They Start

Is PPC Training the Same as Google Ads Training?

Close, but no. PPC means pay per click. It is a way to buy ads. Google Ads is one place to do that. PPC training can cover other ad platforms too. This page covers Google Ads only.

Do You Need a Store to Learn Google Ads?

No. You need one real thing to advertise and a budget you can lose. A product is a clean way to practice, because a click either turns into a sale or it does not. A service works too.

Can You Learn Google Ads Online Without Running Ads?

Yes. You can learn the words and the tool online. Reading an account takes more. Our view: run one small campaign when you can, so you practice on your own search terms. Learn it at no cost

Open Skillshop and Pick One Today

Pick one course. Only one. Then write your daily budget on paper before you build anything. If you sell products on Shopify and want people to ask, the Lab is there when you get stuck.
