What Is Conversion Tracking?

Also written as purchase tracking, conversion tag, Google Ads conversions.

Definition

Conversion tracking is the setup that tells Google Ads when a click turns into a real sale, and how much that sale is worth. For an ecommerce store, Smart Bidding uses this number to pick the next click. If the tag misses sales or counts them twice, every bid aims at the wrong target.

Conversion Tracking, Explained

You need one purchase conversion that fires when someone pays. Mark only that one as primary. Send the real order value with it, not a dummy 1. Add to cart, begin checkout, and page views belong in secondary. They are useful to watch, but they are not sales.

The common mistake is double counting. The store has a Google Ads purchase tag and an imported GA4 purchase, both marked primary. Every sale shows twice. ROAS looks huge. The bank account does not. Pick one source of truth for purchases and leave the other as secondary, or switch it off.

The other common miss is a pixel-only setup. Safari and ad blockers hide a chunk of iPhone sales. On pixel-only setups in our accounts that chunk is often around 30 to 40 percent. Google then bids as if those orders never happened. Turn on enhanced conversions. Send the sale from your store's server as well. Each week, compare Google Ads conversions to real store orders from Google traffic. Close that gap before you change a bid.

How We Use It at ZenoX

We run 200+ ecom accounts and we check tracking first, every time. We never scale until a real test purchase lands as a conversion with the right order value. We mark only purchase as primary and turn on enhanced conversions. We match Google Ads numbers against Shopify orders before we read break-even ROAS or set a bid target.

Questions People Ask About Conversion Tracking

Why Does Conversion Tracking Matter so Much on Google Ads?

Smart Bidding only knows about the sales it can see. If tracking is broken, it bids on a lie. A store that misses iPhone sales looks worse than it is, so Google pulls back. A store that double counts looks better than it is, so Google spends more on a fake ROAS. Fix the data before you touch budget or bids.

What Is the Most Common Conversion Tracking Mistake for Ecommerce?

Two primary purchase actions. A Google Ads tag and a GA4 import both counting the same order. ROAS then looks twice as good as the bank. The other miss is sending a fixed value of 1 for every sale. Then a 20 dollar order and a 200 dollar order look the same. One primary purchase, real order value, is the fix.
