What Is Item Group ID?

Also written as item_group_id, variant group id, parent SKU.

Definition

An item group ID is the shared code that ties every size and color of one product together in the Merchant Center feed. Google treats those rows as one listing with options, not as separate products. For an ecommerce store on Google Ads, a wrong group ID can hide variants or make the same dress compete with itself.

Item Group ID, Explained

Every variant row still needs its own offer id. The item group ID is the parent they share. Google recommends the parent SKU. The value can be up to 50 characters. Send the same value on every color and size of that product. Send a different value on a different product.

Take eight colorways of one dress. One shared group ID makes one listing with color options. Eight different group IDs make eight listings that bid against each other. If those eight share an ID with a jacket, Google merges them. Then one product shows and the rest sit hidden, with no error thrown.

Keep the group graph stable. Do not rewrite item group IDs in a supplemental feed. If variants look wrong in Merchant Center, fix the primary feed mapping, not a side sheet. Many shops use the parent product id as the group ID. That is a fine value if every variant of that product shares it, and no other product does.

How We Use It at ZenoX

We never overwrite item group IDs. On the 200+ ecom accounts we run, the primary feed owns the variant graph. Our supplemental feed rewrites titles and copy only. A bad group ID merges live listings, so we leave that field alone.

Questions People Ask About Item Group ID

What Is Item_group_id in a Google Shopping Feed?

It is the parent code that groups every size and color of one product. Google shows those rows as one listing with options. Use the same value on every variant of that product. Use a different value on a different product. Google recommends the parent SKU, up to 50 characters.

What Happens If Two Different Products Share the Same Item Group ID?

Google merges them into one listing. One product shows. The other variants sit hidden, and Merchant Center often throws no error. That is why a wrong group ID is worse than a messy title. Fix the primary feed mapping. Do not patch it with a supplemental feed.
