Is Google AdWords the Same as Google Ads?

The short answer

Yes, Google AdWords and Google Ads are the same product, and AdWords is just the old name. Google changed it on 24 July 2018. If a guide says AdWords, it means Google Ads, but its steps may be out of date. Before you copy settings from an old lesson, check its date, the same way ZenoX dates the Google facts in its guides.

Why You Still See the Old Name

Google changed the name on 24 July 2018, and its help page still says so, checked 5 November 2026. Old guides, forums and job posts still say AdWords. Reddit's r/adwords kept the name too. People still search it, so sellers still use it. When you see it, read it as Google Ads.

What Old AdWords Guides Get Wrong

The old rules are the real risk. We checked three against Google's help pages on 5 November 2026.

Exact match. Old guides say your ad shows only for that exact phrase. Google now says exact match means the same meaning or the same intent.

Quality Score. Many guides treat it as a number that feeds the auction. Google says: "Quality Score is not an input in the ad auction." Google calls it a diagnostic tool.

Display. Old guides teach it as its own campaign type for the long run. Google says Display campaigns are moving to Demand Gen.

Do Not Mix It Up with AdSense

AdWords was the buying side, and Google Ads still is. AdSense is the separate product that pays site owners for ad space. So if you want to buy ads, you want Google Ads.
