What Is Asset Group?

Also written as asset groups, PMax asset group.

Definition

An asset group is the building block inside a Performance Max campaign. It holds the products that can serve, plus any headlines, images, videos and audience signals you add. For an ecommerce store, each asset group is a product set with its own creative pool, not a separate campaign.

Asset Group, Explained

A Performance Max campaign can hold several asset groups. Each one has a listing group that picks products, and a set of assets Google can mix into ads. In a feed-only setup the asset slots stay empty, so the listing group and the feed do the work. When you do add assets, they belong to that group only.

The common mistake is making five or six asset groups on day one. Each group then gets too little conversion data to learn. Another mistake is putting the whole catalog in one group with mixed creative, so a cheap accessory and a high-ticket set share the same signals.

Start with one feed-only asset group. When you have real labels, split by performance or margin so each group has a clear job. Two groups with enough data beat five thin ones. Do not set a different target ROAS per asset group. That target lives on the campaign. If two tiers need two targets, they need two campaigns, not two groups.

How We Use It at ZenoX

We start with one feed-only asset group on Performance Max. When labels are live we split high performers from the rest. We do not open five groups on a new account. Target ROAS stays at campaign level, so a tier that needs its own target gets its own campaign. We read break-even ROAS first.

Questions People Ask About Asset Group

How Many Asset Groups Should a Performance Max Campaign Have?

Start with one. A new campaign needs enough conversions in one pool to learn. When custom labels are live, two groups is a common next step: one for strong products, one for the rest. More groups split the data thinner. If you need a different bid target, that is a new campaign, not another asset group.

Does an Asset Group Need Headlines and Images?

Not if you run feed-only Performance Max. The product feed already has a title, image and price, and Shopping ads can run from that. Headlines, logos and videos are extra. Add them when the product needs creative, or when feed-only will not move. Keep those assets inside the group that holds the matching products.
