What Is Feed-Only Performance Max?

Also written as Feed Only PMax, PMax Feed Only, feed-only PMax.

Definition

Feed-only Performance Max is a Performance Max campaign built from your product feed, with no extra headlines or videos from you. For an ecommerce store, this keeps most spend on Shopping ads that use product data. Google can still show ads on other surfaces using images from the feed.

Feed-Only Performance Max, Explained

Feed-only means you leave the asset slots empty on purpose. You add no headlines, logos or YouTube videos. The ads Google builds come from the title, image, price and other fields in your Merchant Center feed. Most of the money then lands on Shopping ads.

The mistake is thinking feed-only is Shopping-only. It is not. Google can still use feed images on Display or Discover. Final URL expansion and auto-created assets can pull even more surfaces in. Cheap clicks from random places can sneak through if those boxes stay on.

Turn off final URL expansion and auto-created assets in most ecom accounts. Check where spend actually went, not just the blended average CPC (cost per click). If Display or YouTube shows up with junk, add account-level negatives and tighten the listing groups. Add real assets later only when the product itself needs creative, or when feed-only will not get moving.

How We Use It at ZenoX

We start every new account with feed-only Performance Max. That is the default on 200+ ecom accounts. Assets are the exception, not the start. We also launch Standard Shopping for wasters and a brand Search campaign on day one. We add assets later only if feed-only is stuck or the product is truly creative-led.

Questions People Ask About Feed-Only Performance Max

Is Feed-Only Performance Max the Same as a Shopping-Only Campaign?

It is not a Shopping-only campaign. Feed-only means you did not upload extra headlines, logos or videos. Google still can show ads on other surfaces using images from your feed. In most accounts it lands mostly on Shopping, but Display or Discover clicks can still appear. Check placement reports instead of trusting the name.

Should a New Ecommerce Store Start with Feed-Only PMax?

In most new ecom accounts, yes. A feed-only setup keeps the first data clean because Google is matching products, not testing random creative. Add a Standard Shopping campaign for weak products and a brand Search campaign at the same time. Add assets later if feed-only will not spend or the product needs creative to sell.
