What Is Campaign?
Also written as Google Ads campaign, ad campaign, campaign type.
Definition
A campaign is the main building block of a Google Ads account. Google defines it as a set of ad groups that share a budget, location targeting and other settings. For an ecommerce store, a campaign holds the goal, the money and the rules, while the products or ads sit one level down.

Campaign, Explained
Google Ads stacks up in levels. The account sits on top. Inside it are campaigns. Inside most campaigns are ad groups, and inside those are your ads and keywords. Performance Max swaps ad groups for asset groups, but the idea is the same.
Google says a campaign is "a set of ad groups (ads, keywords, and bids)" (checked 5 November 2026). Those groups share a budget, location targeting and other settings. So the big choices live here: budget, language, location and where the ads can run. If you want two different budgets, you need two campaigns.
You also pick a type. On 5 November 2026, Google's main list was Performance Max, Search, Display, Video, App and Shopping. Demand Gen sits in the same menu. Each one reaches people in a different place.
Think of a store selling candles and gift sets. It might run Performance Max for the full range. Search can cover its own brand name. Standard Shopping can hold the weak products. Each has a clear job.
Do not build too many. Ten small campaigns split your budget and your data, and none of them gets enough sales to learn from. Give every campaign one job. If you cannot say what that job is, you probably do not need it.
How We Use It at ZenoX
Every new account starts with the same three campaigns. Feed-only Performance Max holds everything except the wasters. Standard Shopping holds the wasters. Brand Search catches people typing the store's name. All three land paused, so a human reads the build before anything goes live.
Questions People Ask About Campaign
How Many Campaigns Does a New Store Need?
Fewer than you think. We start with three: feed-only Performance Max, Standard Shopping for weak products, and brand Search. More campaigns split your budget and your data. Add one only when it has a clear job that the others cannot do.
What Settings Sit at the Campaign Level?
Google names budget, language, location and where ads can run on the Google Network (checked 5 November 2026). The bid strategy usually sits here too. Ads and keywords sit lower down, in ad groups. So anything shared across a group of ads is set on the campaign.
