What Is Learning Phase?

Also written as learning mode, Smart Bidding learning, learning period.

Definition

The learning phase is the stretch after a big change when Smart Bidding is still guessing. Google is collecting new conversion data, and bids can swing day to day. For an ecommerce store, this is why a sudden budget jump or a new target can make ROAS wobble for a week or two.

Learning Phase, Explained

Google needs a run of conversions at the new setting before it trusts the pattern. A new campaign or a new bid strategy puts it back into this mode. So does a big budget jump, a heavy feed edit, or a pause and restart. Small steps usually do not. In our accounts, raising budget by 10 to 20 percent is a step. Doubling it is a reset.

The mistake is poking the campaign every other day because one day looked bad. Each poke restarts the guessing. You then judge a campaign that never had a quiet week. Leave it alone long enough to finish learning, then judge the trend, not a single day.

Treat about 30 conversions in a rolling month as a practical floor for reading Smart Bidding. Below that, one lucky order or one missed tag swings the whole picture. If you must change something, change one thing, wait a few days, and only then change the next.

How We Use It at ZenoX

We raise budgets in steps of 10 to 20 percent and wait three to four days at each level, our house cadence, not a Google rule. We do not add a tight target on a new feed-only PMax. Across 200+ ecom accounts, a campaign still in a fresh learning phase is a reason to wait, not a reason to rebuild the account.

Questions People Ask About Learning Phase

How Long Is the Google Ads Learning Phase?

It is usually one to two weeks after a big change. There is no fixed conversion count, but Chris's rule of thumb is that Smart Bidding works more steadily once you have around 30 conversions in a month. A new campaign, a big budget jump, or a new target can start the clock again.

Does Raising My Google Ads Budget Reset the Learning Phase?

A small step, around 20 percent, usually does not. A sudden jump, like doubling the daily budget, often does. Then bids swing while Google re-learns at the higher spend. Step up, wait a few days for it to settle, then step again.
