What Is Responsive Search Ad?

Also written as RSA, responsive search ads, RSAs.

Definition

A responsive search ad is the text ad format for Google Search. You give Google several headlines and descriptions, and it mixes them to fit each search. For an ecommerce store, you can write lines about products, shipping and returns, and Google tests which mix works. It is one ad with many possible versions.

Responsive Search Ad, Explained

Google says responsive search ads "let you create an ad that adapts to show more relevant messages to your customers" (checked 5 November 2026). You write the parts and Google builds the ad.

The limits, as Google listed them that day: up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions for one ad. It can show up to 3 headlines in the headline spot. A minimum of one headline and one description will be selected to show.

So your copy has to work in any order. Headline three may show first. Every line must make sense alone. If headline two says "Same Great Quality", that line means nothing without headline one.

For a store selling running shoes, write different kinds of lines. Use the brand name. Use the product range. Use a real shipping fact, a real returns promise and a real price point. Different lines give Google more to test. Ten versions of the same sentence give it nothing.

Pinning locks a headline to one position. For brand Search, pin your brand name to headline one, so it always shows at the top. Google says pinning "isn't recommended for most advertisers", because each pin cuts how much it can mix. So pin only what you need.

Never write a claim your store cannot back up. Google can show any line at any time, so every line must stay true.

How We Use It at ZenoX

On brand Search, we pin the brand name to headline one. All copy comes from the shop's own website, so every line is true for that store. We check each claim against what the site says. No generic ad templates. Ads land paused, and a human reads them first.

Questions People Ask About Responsive Search Ad

How Many Headlines Can a Responsive Search Ad Have?

Google allows up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions for one ad (checked 5 November 2026). You must enter at least 3 headlines and 2 descriptions. Google can show up to 3 headlines in the headline spot. You do not have to fill every slot, but give it enough different lines to test.

What Does Pinning Mean in a Responsive Search Ad?

Pinning locks a headline or description to one position, so it always shows there. It is useful for a brand name in headline one. Every pin gives Google less to mix, so pin only what must stay in place. Leave the other lines free.
