What Is the Difference Between Google Ads and SEO?
Published

The short answer
Google Ads are paid spots you buy through an auction, while SEO earns unpaid spots in the normal search results. Ads can start fast, and they stop when you stop paying. SEO is slow, but those clicks carry no ad cost. We run the paid side at ZenoX, so read our view with that in mind.
How Each One Works
Google Ads runs an auction for every search. Your ad's order comes from Ad Rank, which uses your bid, your ad and landing page quality, and other factors. In a Search campaign you pick the keywords and set the budget, so you have a lot of control. Checked on Google's help pages, 5 November 2026.
SEO (search engine optimization) means making your pages good enough for Google to show them in the normal results. Nobody bids. You cannot buy a spot there, and you cannot pick the day it arrives.
What Each One Costs
With Google Ads and cost-per-click bidding, you pay for each click. Pause your campaign and the traffic from ads stops.
SEO has no click price, but it still costs you. You pay in time, writing and page work, often for a long time before you see much. Those pages can keep working after you stop.
Which One a Store Should Do First
This is our view, and we sell the paid side. If you need sales now and people already search for your product, start with Google Ads. You find out fast what sells, and the sum is simple: can your margin carry the click price?
If your margin is too thin for that, or you have time and little cash, put your effort into SEO first. Long term, we like both.
How the Two Help Each Other
Your ads show you which search words turn into sales. Those are the words worth writing pages for. A search that took a click and sold something beats a guess from any keyword tool.
