Take it. It costs nothing and teaches the words. Then stop treating it as proof.

Google Ads Certification: How to Get It and Whether It Is Worth It

Google Ads certification is free on Skillshop. The exam allows 75 minutes and needs 80 percent. The cert lasts one year. How to pass, and what it skips.

Facts checked 5 November 2026 on Google's own pages: About Google Ads certifications, the Skillshop FAQ and digital badges.

Our take: do it. It costs nothing and it teaches you the words. Then stop treating it as proof. A cert shows you passed a test. It says nothing about whether you can make a store profitable.

Google agrees on one point: "We recommend that you have on-the-job experience using Google Ads."

How Do You Get Google Ads Certified?

  1. Sign in to Skillshop. This is Google's own training site.
  2. Pick a certification. Not sure? Use the picks below.
  3. Study the course. In the Search course, every study section is marked optional. Only "Pass the assessment" is required.
  4. Take the assessment. You get 75 minutes and you need 80 percent.

It costs nothing. Google's words: "Skillshop is available at no cost." More in our cost answer.

The cert is personal. Google says: "It's not enough for a co-worker to be certified or for your agency to be badged." To call yourself Google Ads certified, you sit the exam yourself.

What Are the Google Ads Certification Exam Rules?

You get 75 minutes and need 80 percent. You can retake it one day later, with no limit on attempts. The certification then lasts one year.

Every row comes from Google, checked 5 November 2026.

Other sites print question counts. We could not find one on a current Google page, so we leave it out.

Which Google Ads Certification Should You Take?

Search first for most people. Shopping first if you sell products. Measurement once you own the numbers. Those are our picks.

Google's main ones cover Search, Display, Video, Shopping and Apps. Skillshop also lists others, such as Measurement. A Google Ads Creative title sits on the Skillshop catalog shelf too. We could read its name only, so we will not guess what it covers.

The times below are course study times, not exam times. Skillshop shows each one as the average for the whole course, read 5 November 2026. The exam limit is 75 minutes.

Google Ads Certification CourseStudy Time (Not Exam Time)Take It If
Google Ads Search3h 40mYou run text ads, or you are not sure where to start
AI-Powered Shopping ads1h 15mYou sell products
Google Ads Measurement2h 40mYou own the tracking and the reports
AI-Powered Performance Ads3h 58mYou finished Search or Shopping and want more
Google Ads Video4h 01mYou run YouTube ads
Google Ads Display2h 56mYou must run Display today. See the warning below
Google Ads Apps2h 47mYou promote an app

Start here if you have no strong reason not to. Skillshop marks this course Intermediate. Display, Video and Shopping are marked Beginner. So expect it to ask a bit more of you.

The reason to take it first is one section: "Understand the Google Ads Auction". In our experience the auction is the idea that makes the rest of Google Ads make sense. Once you get it, you see why the highest bid does not always win.

Selling products? Search can still help you. Our four-hour store build includes a small brand Search campaign. That one catches people who type your store name.

Search is also one of the five certifications Google counts for Partner status. The others are Display, Video, Shopping ads and Apps.

The Skillshop shelf shows more than one Search title, such as Google Ads Search Certification (2026) and a Professional version. We could read the names only, so we will not guess what differs. Google does say this: "The Google Ads Professional certifications don't count toward the Partners badge." Working toward Partner status? Check the title before you start.

AI-Powered Shopping Ads Certification: The First Pick for Stores

This is the Shopping certification. Skillshop lists it as "AI-Powered Shopping ads". It is marked Beginner. At 1h 15m it is the shortest course on the list.

Selling candles or sneakers? Start here.

Take this one when you are the person who reads the reports and answers for them. Google leaves it off the five that count for Partner status, so take it for the skill.

Google says: "Google Display Ads campaigns are moving to Demand Gen" (source). So Display is not a safe first pick for long-term use.

Video is the longest course here. Take it if YouTube ads are part of your plan.

How Do You Pass the Google Ads Certification Exam?

Do the study, learn the auction cold and sit the exam in one go. You need 80 percent inside 75 minutes.

Block the full 75 minutes. The timer cannot pause. Google says that if you leave, "the timer will immediately expire." Phone off. Laptop plugged in.

Do the optional study. You can jump straight to the assessment. Don't. The study is the part you keep.

Learn the auction cold:

  • The auction runs for every search. Google: "the whole auction process starts again with potentially different results each time".
  • Ad Rank is the score that sets your place. It uses 6 factors:
    • Your bid. What you are willing to pay.
    • Quality. How good your ads and landing page are.
    • Thresholds. The minimum score an ad needs to show.
    • Competition. How tough the other ads in the auction are.
    • Context. The search terms, location, device, time and more.
    • Ad assets. The extras on your ad, and how much Google expects them to help.
  • Quality Score is not one of the 6. Google: "Quality Score is not an input in the ad auction. It's a diagnostic tool". Plenty of blogs still teach this wrong.

Now picture it on a real store. Say you sell hiking boots. A shopper types "waterproof hiking boots". Google narrows the field to eligible ads that match. Ads below the quality floor drop out. The rest line up by Ad Rank. The next shopper types the same words and the whole thing runs again. A result can change from one search to the next.

Click around a real account. Google recommends on-the-job experience. Open Google Ads and find each setting the course names. Reading about a setting is easy. Finding it in a live account takes practice.

Failed? Retake it one day later. There is no limit on attempts. Write down what tripped you up, study that, and go again.

Skip the answer dumps. You pass and you learn nothing, and your first real account shows it.

Best Order for a Store Owner

  1. Do the Shopping course. Skillshop's average is 1h 15m of study.
  2. Open your own Google Ads account. Find each setting the course named.
  3. Block 75 minutes and sit the exam.
  4. Do the Search course next.
  5. Set a reminder 11 months after you pass. The renewal window opens 30 days before your cert expires.

After a job instead? Swap steps 1 and 4, so Search comes first.

What Does Google Ads Certification Not Teach You?

It does not teach the calls that make or lose money on a real store. This part is our view, from running 400+ ecom stores. We said the same in our answer on whether Skillshop is enough for ecommerce.

Skillshop teaches the words and the settings. Google wrote it for every advertiser, so it teaches Google's way. It cannot look at your store. No exam makes these calls for you:

  • Which product to cut. One product eats budget and sells nothing. No exam tells you when to stop.
  • How to write feed titles that sell. A shopper types "merino hiking socks". Your feed says "Trail Sock 3000". Knowing what the title field does will not fix that.
  • How to fix a disapproved product. Getting a real flagged product back live is a hands-on job.
  • What to do when Performance Max spends without selling. You can name every setting and still not know which one to touch.
  • How to check Google's numbers against real sales. Google counts conversions. Your store counts orders. Someone has to compare the two.

These calls are the job. We have $200M+ in client revenue tracked through our campaigns (our own internal total, not audited).

Is Google Ads Certification Worth It?

Yes, for a job or an agency. For a store owner, take it for the knowledge. The certificate does not sell a single product.

You AreVerdictWhy
Job seekerYesCheap proof you know the words
Freelancer or agencyYesPartner status needs certified strategists
Store ownerTake it for the knowledgeIt teaches the terms. The certificate sells nothing
Hiring someoneTreat it as a floorIt shows they passed a test. Ask for real account work

Partner status is a company badge. A personal cert is not the same thing. Google's Partner rules ask for "a minimum of 50% of your account strategists certified in Google Ads". So your cert helps a company get there. It does not make you a Partner.

Hiring? Ask three things. Can I see a real account you ran? Which product did you cut, and why? How did you check Google's numbers against real sales? A cert answers none of them. Our agency verification checklist goes deeper.

Who can skip it? An owner who has handed the account to someone else and only wants to check their work. That checklist will teach you more than the exam.

Where Do You Go After the Certificate?

Into a real account. Our full learning path is for anyone learning Google Ads, whatever you sell.

Want to watch a real build? I recorded a four-hour video. It is free on YouTube and runs 4h 23m. It is a dropshipping build, and it is not a lesson from the Lab. Search the chaptered transcript to jump around.

A full dropshipping build, start to finish.

Comparing options first? We lined up 7 Google Ads courses and the main Google Ads communities, with ours marked. For the rest of the store, see these ecommerce courses.

Take the exam this week. Then start the full path.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the Google Ads certification exam?

You get 75 minutes. You cannot pause the timer, and leaving ends it. That is the exam limit. Course study time is separate: Skillshop shows an average of 3 hours 40 minutes for the whole Search course and 1 hour 15 minutes for the Shopping course. Checked 5 November 2026.

What score do you need to pass the Google Ads certification exam?

80 percent or higher. If you miss it, you can retake the exam one day later. Google's Skillshop FAQ says 24 hours. There is no limit on attempts. Checked 5 November 2026.

Which Google Ads certification should I take first?

Search for most people. Shopping if you sell products. Add Measurement once you are the person who owns the numbers. Display is not a safe first pick for long-term use, because Google says Display campaigns are moving to Demand Gen.

Is Google Ads certification worth it?

For a job or an agency, yes. Google's Partner rules ask for at least 50 percent of a company's account strategists to be certified in Google Ads. For a store owner, the certificate does not sell a single product. The knowledge does, and it costs nothing, so take it for that.

Does the Google Ads eCom Lab give a certificate?

No. The Google Ads eCom Lab gives no certificate. Neither does our four-hour video. Only Google's Skillshop issues Google Ads certificates.

Is a Google Ads certification the same as Google Partner status?

No. A certification belongs to one person. Partner status is a company badge. Google says of the personal cert: "It's not enough for a co-worker to be certified or for your agency to be badged." A company earns Partner status with its own requirements, including certified account strategists.
