What Is Conversion Rate?

Also written as CVR, conv. rate, ecommerce conversion rate.

Definition

Conversion rate is the share of ad interactions that turn into a conversion, shown as a percent. For an ecommerce store, that usually means the share of clicks that end in a sale. If 1,000 clicks bring 40 orders, the conversion rate is 4 percent. It only means something when your tracking is correct.

Conversion Rate, Explained

Google calls conversion rate "the average number of conversions per ad interaction, shown as a percentage" (checked 5 November 2026). The sum is conversions divided by interactions. Google's example is 50 conversions from 1,000 interactions, which is 5 percent. On a Shopping ad, an interaction is usually a click.

This number tells you what happens after the click. CTR is about the ad. Conversion rate is mostly about the store, the offer and the price. So a low rate often points away from the campaign. Check the product page, the shipping cost, the reviews and the checkout on a phone.

Be careful about what counts as a conversion. If your account counts add to cart or page views as conversions, the rate looks great and tells you nothing. For a store, the main conversion should be a sale.

Be careful with rates you read online too. Many reports mix leads with sales, so you cannot compare them with your store's sales rate. Compare your own products with each other, and your own months with each other.

Small samples fool people. Two sales from 10 clicks looks like 20 percent, and it rarely holds up. Wait for enough clicks before you call a winner.

How We Use It at ZenoX

We read conversion rate per product, not as one store number. It helps sort champions from wasters. A good ad with a weak rate sends us to the offer, price and product page. We check order counts against Shopify where we can, so a broken tag does not fool us with a pretty rate.

Questions People Ask About Conversion Rate

How Do You Calculate Conversion Rate in Google Ads?

Divide conversions by ad interactions, then show it as a percent. Google's example is 50 conversions from 1,000 interactions, which is 5 percent (checked 5 November 2026). Make sure the conversion counted is a real sale, or the number will not tell you much about your store.

Why Is My Conversion Rate Low When My Ads Get Clicks?

Clicks show the ad worked. Sales depend on what comes next. Check the product page first: price, shipping cost, reviews, speed and the checkout on a phone. Then check your tracking, because a broken purchase tag can make a healthy store look dead. Then look at the search terms bringing those clicks.
