What Is Keyword Planner?

Also written as Google Keyword Planner, Google Ads Keyword Planner, keyword tool.

Definition

Keyword Planner is a research tool inside Google Ads that shows keyword ideas, monthly search estimates and bid estimates. For an ecommerce store, it shows how people search for a product before you build a Search campaign. It gives you estimates, not promises, and it does not run any ads by itself.

Keyword Planner, Explained

Keyword Planner sits inside your Google Ads account. Google says it "helps you research keywords for your Search campaigns" (checked 5 November 2026). You type a product or a word. It gives you ideas, an estimate of monthly searches, and the rough cost for your ad to show on that search. It can also forecast clicks and conversions for a plan.

Say you sell dog beds. You type "dog bed" and see ideas like "orthopedic dog bed" or "large dog bed". That tells you which words real shoppers use. It also tells you which words are too broad to pay for.

Do not read these numbers as exact. Search volume is an estimate. A big number does not mean buyers. Plenty of people search to read, compare or look at pictures. The cost is an estimate too, because the auction runs again for every search.

You also need to finish your account setup first. Google asks for billing information before you can use the basic features. Once your ads run, trust your own search terms report over any forecast. That report shows what real people typed before they clicked and bought.

How We Use It at ZenoX

A new ecom store does not start from Keyword Planner with us. Our first build is feed-only Performance Max, which takes no keywords from you. We use Keyword Planner data for demand and trend checks in audits and for our own SEO work. Feed titles come from search terms that already converted.

Questions People Ask About Keyword Planner

Do You Need a Google Ads Account to Use Keyword Planner?

Yes. Keyword Planner lives inside Google Ads. Google says you must finish your account setup and enter your billing information to use basic features (checked 5 November 2026). Keyword ideas count as a basic feature.

Are Keyword Planner Numbers Exact?

No. Google calls them estimates. Monthly searches are rough, and the cost figures tell you what a term may cost, not what you will pay. Use the tool to compare words and spot the ones shoppers use. Then check real results in your search terms report once ads run.
