What Is Conversion?
Also written as conversions, Google Ads conversion, conversion action.
Definition
A conversion in Google Ads is an action you count as valuable, used to measure your ads and steer your bidding. For an ecommerce store, the conversion that matters is a purchase. If a shopper clicks your ad for a backpack and pays for it, that sale is one conversion.

Conversion, Explained
You decide what counts as a conversion. Google only knows what you tell it. A purchase is the obvious one. Add to cart, begin checkout and sign-ups can be tracked too, but they are not sales.
That choice matters more than most beginners think. Google's bidding learns from conversions. Count add to carts as conversions and it will happily find you people who add to cart and leave. Your report looks full and your bank account stays flat.
A conversion is also not always an order in your store. Google can report it against the day of the click, not the day of the sale. Tracking can miss orders, or count one order twice. So a conversion number in Google Ads is a report, and your store's order list is the truth.
One more trap. When a report or benchmark talks about conversions, read what it counted. Some public benchmarks mix leads and other actions in with sales, so those rates do not tell you what a store should expect.
How We Use It at ZenoX
On the 400+ ecom stores we run, purchase is the one conversion that steers bidding. Add to cart and the rest are for watching only. We check a real test order lands with the right value, then compare Google's numbers with store orders before we trust them.
Questions People Ask About Conversion
What Is a Conversion in Google Ads?
It is an action you choose to count because it has value to your business, like a purchase. Google uses it to measure your campaigns and to guide bidding. For a store, make the purchase your main conversion, so bidding chases sales and not browsing.
Does a Conversion Always Mean a Sale?
No. A conversion is whatever action you set up. It might be a purchase, a phone call or a sign-up. Even a purchase conversion can differ from your store's orders if tracking misses or doubles a sale. Check the action name and compare with real orders.
