What Is CPM?
Also written as cost per thousand impressions, cost per mille, vCPM.
Definition
CPM means cost per thousand impressions. It is what you pay for your ad to show 1,000 times. In Google Ads, CPM bidding is used on the Display Network and YouTube. For an ecommerce store, it is a price for attention, because you pay for views even when nobody clicks on your product.

CPM, Explained
CPM stands for cost per mille, and mille means thousand. It answers one question. What did 1,000 ad views cost me?
The sum is cost divided by impressions, times 1,000. Spend 20 dollars and get 4,000 impressions, and your CPM is 5 dollars.
Google describes it as a way to bid "where you pay per one thousand views (impressions) on the Google Display Network" (checked 5 November 2026). You can see it on YouTube too. There is also viewable CPM (vCPM). With vCPM, Google says you only pay when your ads can be seen.
CPM is one way to bill. Cost per click (CPC) is another. With cost-per-click bidding on Search and Shopping, a thousand people can see your product and you pay nothing until someone clicks. So do not assume every Google campaign bills the same way.
The lowest CPM is rarely the best deal. Cheap views are often cheap for a reason. The placement is weak, or the viewers do not care. A higher CPM that reaches real buyers can beat a low one that reaches nobody. Read CPM next to clicks and sales. On its own, it tells you the price of a view, not its worth.
How We Use It at ZenoX
We do not bid on CPM in our core ecom build. Feed-only Performance Max, Standard Shopping and brand Search all chase sales or clicks. When a store moves into Demand Gen or YouTube, we read CPM next to clicks and sales. A cheap view that never turns into a buyer is no win.
Questions People Ask About CPM
How Do You Calculate CPM?
Divide your cost by your impressions, then multiply by 1,000. If you spent 20 dollars and your ad showed 4,000 times, your CPM is 5 dollars. The sum is the same whether you bought the views on CPM or got them on another kind of bidding.
What Is the Difference Between CPM and CPC?
CPM is the price of 1,000 ad views. CPC is the price of one click. With CPM bidding, you pay for the views. With cost-per-click bidding, you pay when someone clicks. Search and Shopping usually run on clicks. Display and YouTube can run on views.
