What Is CPC?
Also written as cost per click, cost-per-click, average CPC, max CPC.
Definition
CPC means cost per click. It is the amount you pay when someone clicks your ad under cost-per-click bidding. In Google Ads, your maximum CPC is the most you are willing to pay, and your actual CPC is what you end up paying. For an ecommerce store, it decides how many shoppers a budget buys.

CPC, Explained
There are three versions of this number, and people mix them up.
Max CPC is the limit you set. It is the highest amount you are willing to pay for a click. Actual CPC is what one click really cost. Average CPC is your total click cost divided by your clicks.
You often pay less than your max. Google says you are charged less, "sometimes much less", than your maximum (checked 5 November 2026). In its words, "you only pay what's minimally required" to clear the Ad Rank thresholds and beat the ad right below you. The gap to that competitor matters too. As it grows, the higher ad may pay a higher cost per click. So do not read this as a flat one-cent-more rule.
CPC changes with the auction. Your country, your niche, the season, your rivals and your ad quality all move it. Black Friday clicks in the US are a different market from a quiet week in spring.
Do not chase the lowest CPC. Cheap clicks from the wrong search still cost money. A pricier click on a shopper who buys can be the better deal. Read CPC with conversion rate. Then ask what each sale cost.
How We Use It at ZenoX
We watch CPC per store and per product, because a sudden jump can flag a real problem in the account or on Shopping. We do not treat a low CPC as a win. We judge the click by what it sold, then check that against break-even ROAS.
Questions People Ask About CPC
Do You Always Pay Your Max CPC?
No. Your max is a limit, not the price. Google says you are often charged less, sometimes much less (checked 5 November 2026). You pay what it takes to clear the Ad Rank thresholds and beat the ad below you. Bid adjustments can change the limit.
What Is a Good CPC for an Ecommerce Store?
There is no one good number. A good CPC is one your margin can pay for. Take your profit on a sale, then work out how many clicks it takes to get that sale. If the cost of those clicks stays under your profit, the CPC works for that product.
