What Is YouTube Ads?
Also written as YouTube advertising, video ads, Video campaign.
Definition
YouTube ads are video ads you buy through Google Ads that play on YouTube, before or inside videos, in feeds and on Shorts. For an ecommerce store, they put a product in front of people who are not searching for it yet. That makes them a way to create demand, not to catch it.

YouTube Ads, Explained
You buy YouTube ads inside Google Ads, not on YouTube. They can run from a Video campaign or a Demand Gen campaign, and Performance Max can reach YouTube too.
The main formats, as Google listed them on 5 November 2026:
Skippable in-stream ads let viewers skip after 5 seconds. Non-skippable in-stream ads are 60 seconds or shorter. Bumper ads run 5 to 6 seconds and cannot be skipped. In-feed ads show where people browse. Shorts ads run in the Shorts feed.
How you pay depends on the setup. Some campaigns bill per view. Some bill per 1,000 impressions (CPM). On a skippable ad, Google counted a view on that date in two cases. Someone watched 30 seconds, or the whole ad if it was shorter. Or someone clicked on it.
The big difference from Shopping is intent. A person searching for a standing desk wants one now. A person watching a video did not ask for your desk. So the ad has to stop them, show the problem and show the product fast.
Do not judge YouTube like Shopping. It sits higher up the funnel, so direct sales look weaker. A store with thin margins or a weak offer burns money here first. Get Shopping working before you add video.
How We Use It at ZenoX
We do not start a new ecom store on YouTube. Our first build is feed-only Performance Max, Standard Shopping and brand Search. YouTube comes later, mostly through Demand Gen, once Shopping is profitable and maxed out. Without a real video and a strong offer, we hold it back.
Questions People Ask About YouTube Ads
How Long Do You Have to Watch a YouTube Ad Before You Can Skip It?
On a skippable in-stream ad, Google says viewers can skip after 5 seconds (checked 5 November 2026). So the first 5 seconds have to do the heavy work for your product. Show it fast. Bumper ads and non-skippable ads work differently, because viewers cannot skip them at all.
Are YouTube Ads Good for a New Ecommerce Store?
Usually not as a first step. YouTube reaches people who are not looking for your product yet, so sales take longer and cost more to prove. Start with campaigns that catch people already searching, such as Shopping. Add YouTube when the store has a proven offer and a real video.
