What Is Misrepresentation Policy?

Also written as misrep, GMC misrepresentation, Merchant Center misrepresentation.

Definition

Misrepresentation policy is Google Merchant Center's rule that your store, products, and policies must match what shoppers actually see. Prices, stock, business details, and shipping or returns must line up on the feed, the site, and checkout. For an ecommerce store on Google Ads, a mismatch can pause Shopping ads until Google reviews the account again.

Misrepresentation Policy, Explained

Google flags this when Merchant Center and the live store tell different stories. Say, for example, the feed shows 29 euros while the page charges 34. The returns page might promise 30 days while Merchant Center is set to 14. Shoppers see one offer. Google's crawler sees another. That gap is the policy problem.

The usual mistake is to treat it as a small feed glitch and request a review the same day you edit a page. The crawl is slow. If the review runs before Google sees the fix, the review fails. The next one is harder. People also ignore a free-listings-only flag and rebuild the whole campaign, which helps nothing.

Check what is actually paused first. In many accounts the flag hits free listings only, and paid Shopping still runs. Match business name, address, and contact details on the site to Merchant Center. Fix every mismatch. Wait a few days for a recrawl. Then request the review.

How We Use It at ZenoX

On the 200+ ecom accounts we run, we treat misrepresentation as a match problem, not a bid problem. We compare the feed to the live page and the Merchant Center settings before we touch campaigns. If Shopping is paused, we do not raise budgets or change bid targets. We wait until the listing is trusted again.

Questions People Ask About Misrepresentation Policy

What Does a Merchant Center Misrepresentation Warning Mean?

It means Google thinks your store, products, or policies do not match what shoppers see. Check prices, stock, business details, and shipping or returns on the site against Merchant Center. Paid Shopping may still run if only free listings are flagged. Fix the mismatch before you request a review.

Should I Request a Review as Soon as I Fix the Pages?

No. Wait a few days so Google can recrawl the site. A review sent the same day often fails because the crawler still sees the old page. Each failed review makes the next one harder. Fix everything first, wait, then submit once.
