What Is Merchant Center?

Also written as Google Merchant Center, GMC, Merchant Centre.

Definition

Merchant Center is Google's catalog tool that holds your product feed and checks each item against Shopping rules. For an ecommerce store, Performance Max and Standard Shopping can only show products that Merchant Center has approved. If the catalog is down, Shopping ads stop even when the Google Ads campaign looks fine.

Merchant Center, Explained

Merchant Center (GMC) sits between your store and Google Ads. You claim your website, upload or connect a feed, set shipping and returns, and wait for Google to review products. Approved items can appear in Shopping and in Performance Max. Disapproved items cannot, no matter how high you bid.

The common mistake is living only in Google Ads and ignoring GMC diagnostics. A campaign can look enabled while half the catalog is disapproved for price mismatch, missing identifiers, or a policy flag. Another mistake is treating a website claim as optional. If the domain is not verified, products usually cannot serve.

Check the Products tab and the account issues list first when Shopping spend dies. Match feed price and availability to the live page. Keep shipping and returns data in GMC in line with the pages on your site. Fix the real issue, then request a review. Do not open a second Merchant Center on the same domain to dodge a problem.

How We Use It at ZenoX

We rebuild Merchant Center as part of taking on an ecom account. Across 200+ stores, the first check is whether products are actually approved, not whether the campaign is enabled. We connect a clean primary feed plus a supplemental overlay for titles and labels. Shopping ads stay off until the catalog can serve.

Questions People Ask About Merchant Center

What Is Google Merchant Center Used for?

Merchant Center is where Google stores your product catalog for Shopping ads. You send a feed, Google checks each item, and approved products can show in Google Shopping and Performance Max. Google Ads holds the budget and bids. Merchant Center holds the products those bids can actually use.

Why Are My Google Ads Running but My Products Are Not Showing?

The campaign can be enabled while Merchant Center has the products blocked. Open GMC and check account issues and the Products tab. Price mismatches, a missing website claim, disapprovals and suspensions all stop Shopping ads without pausing Google Ads. Fix the catalog first. Raising the budget will not bring a blocked product back.
