What Is Demand Gen?
Also written as Demand Gen campaign, Demand Generation, Google Demand Gen.
Definition
Demand Gen is a Google Ads campaign type for image and video ads. They run on YouTube (including Shorts), Discover, Gmail, Maps and the Google Display Network. For an ecommerce store, it reaches people who are not searching for the product yet. It works as a scaling tool after Shopping makes money, not as a first campaign.

Demand Gen, Explained
Search and Shopping catch people who already want something. Demand Gen goes a step earlier. Google lists its places as "YouTube (including Shorts), Discover, Gmail, Maps, and the Google Display Network" (checked 5 November 2026). Think of a shopper scrolling Shorts who sees your air fryer before they ever thought of buying one.
You do not bid on keywords here. You pick who sees the ad with audience segments, and you bring the creative. That means strong images, and a good video helps a lot.
Google also says Display campaigns are moving into it. So it is worth learning, even if you do not run it yet.
Reporting needs care. Do not compare its ROAS directly with Shopping. Demand Gen sits higher up the funnel, so its direct sales can look low. Heavy remarketing can do the opposite, and make it look better than it really is.
Do not start here because it sounds new. A small store with a weak offer and thin data will burn money. Demand Gen needs creative, audience work and enough budget to learn. Get Shopping and Search working first. Then use Demand Gen to reach more people than search alone can bring you.
How We Use It at ZenoX
We treat Demand Gen as a scale tool, not a launch tool. We add it only once Shopping is profitable and maxed out. A new store starts on feed-only Performance Max, Standard Shopping and brand Search. When we do add Demand Gen, we judge it apart from Shopping.
Questions People Ask About Demand Gen
Where Do Demand Gen Ads Show?
Google lists YouTube (including Shorts), Discover, Gmail, Maps and the Google Display Network (checked 5 November 2026). Notice what is missing: the Search results page. Demand Gen reaches people while they watch, read and scroll, not while they type a search for your product.
Should a New Store Start with Demand Gen?
We would not. Demand Gen needs good creative, audience work and enough budget to learn, and it does not catch people who are ready to buy. Start with campaigns that do. Add Demand Gen once your Shopping and Search campaigns are profitable and you want to reach new people.
