Does Shopify Integrate with Google Ads?

The short answer
Shopify connects to Google Ads through the free Google & YouTube app, which Google built. The app sends your products to Merchant Center, links your Ads account, tracks purchases and can launch a Performance Max campaign. At ZenoX we use the app for the product sync. Then we build the campaigns in Google Ads and track sales from the store's server.
What the Google & YouTube App Does
The integration is Google's own app. You install Google & YouTube from the Shopify App Store. The app is free. You pay for the ads, and that bill comes from Google Ads, not Shopify.
Once it is connected, it does four jobs. It syncs your products, deals and shipping to Merchant Center, the Google account that holds your product feed. It links your Google Ads account, and you set up billing in Merchant Center. It turns on conversion tracking, so a purchase, an add to cart and a started checkout in Shopify count as conversions in Google Ads. And it can launch a Performance Max campaign, the Google campaign type that shows your ads across Search, YouTube, Gmail and Maps.
You can also switch on enhanced conversions in the app. It sends scrambled first-party customer data to Google, so more sales get matched back to an ad.
There is a free extra too. Synced products can show at no cost on the Shopping tab, Search, Images and YouTube. Google calls these free listings. Which spots you get depends on your country.
What Your Store Needs Before It Connects
Shopify lists the rules. You need all of them.
Your online store is live, not in password mode.
You have a working payment provider.
Your Refund Policy and Terms of Service sit in the footer menu.
At least one way to reach you is on a page shoppers can see: email, phone, address or a contact form.
You ship to a supported country and sell in that country's currency.
Your Merchant Center account has a verified domain that no other account uses.
Most products also need a Google product category and an identifier, meaning a GTIN, an MPN or a brand.
One catch if an agency or a holding group runs your Google side. A multi-client Merchant Center account cannot sync products through the app. The sync has to land in the store's own account.
Where the Built-in Setup Stops
The app gets you live. Then there are three gaps we fix on top of it.
Double counting. Google itself warns you to check for duplicate tags when you track in the app and also in the storefront or a custom pixel. The usual mess is the app's purchase action, an old tag in the theme and a GA4 purchase import, all counting the same order. Keep one purchase action as primary. Then place a real test order and check it shows up once.
Lost sales. The app's tracking runs in the shopper's browser. Safari, iOS privacy settings and ad blockers can stop it, so some sales never reach Google. Smart Bidding, Google's automatic bidding, then learns from fewer sales than you really made. That is why we track from the server with our own Shopify app. The sale is read from the order, not from the shopper's browser.
Raw product data. The app sends Google what you have in Shopify. A title like 'The Mila Set' works on your product page and tells a Google search nothing. We leave the Shopify data alone and add a supplemental feed, a second file on top of the main feed that carries search-ready titles, custom labels and fixed categories.
Should You Build Campaigns in the App or in Google Ads?
Use the app for the connection: products, Merchant Center and the account link. Build and run the campaigns in Google Ads. Google points the same way. For more control, such as bidding options, it tells you to edit the campaign in Google Ads, and Shopify does not overwrite those changes.
That is how we run it. For a new client store we build the same three campaigns in Google Ads every time: a Performance Max that runs from the feed, a Standard Shopping campaign for the products that waste spend, and a brand Search campaign. All three start paused, and a media buyer switches them on.
Setting it up yourself? Our free Google Ads eCom Lab on Skool has a weekly question thread and a free vault of checklists and starter SOPs. We run it, so it points back to us. If your store already spends at least €10K a month on ads and you want the whole setup handled, that is where our agency starts.
