What Is Auto-Tagging?
Also written as GCLID, Google Click Identifier, auto tagging.
Definition
Auto-tagging is the Google Ads feature that adds a click ID, called the GCLID, to the link people click on your ad. Conversion tracking and Google Analytics use it to tie a sale back to the click. If a shopper buys a jacket from your ad, this ID helps show which click led there.

Auto-Tagging, Explained
When auto-tagging is on, Google adds a parameter to your link when someone clicks. It stands for Google Click Identifier, and you will see it as gclid in the address bar. You do not write it or edit it. Google says the feature is on by default for new accounts.
It does two jobs. It helps conversion tracking link a sale to an ad click. It also lets you bring Google Ads campaign and cost data into Analytics, and import Analytics engagement numbers into Google Ads.
Things go wrong on the store side. A redirect or a page script can drop the extra text from the link, and then the click ID never arrives. Test it. Add a test gclid to your link, load the page, and check the text is still in the address bar after the page settles.
Auto-tagging is not the same as UTM parameters. UTMs are tags you write yourself. When a link has both, GA4 uses the auto-tagged values for source and medium.
How We Use It at ZenoX
We want the click ID to reach the store on every paid click. A lost gclid breaks the link between a click and a sale, and bidding then learns from less data. So when tracking looks off, test for it.
Questions People Ask About Auto-Tagging
What Does GCLID Mean?
GCLID stands for Google Click Identifier. It is the small piece of text auto-tagging adds to your link when someone clicks your ad. Conversion tracking and Analytics can use it to connect that click with what the person did on your store.
Is Auto-Tagging On by Default in Google Ads?
Google says auto-tagging is turned on by default for new accounts. An older account may be different, so check it in your account settings. Leave it on if you use conversion tracking or Google Analytics, and test that the click ID survives on your store.
