What Is Google Tag?

Also written as gtag.js, global site tag, Google Ads tag.

Definition

The Google tag is a single piece of code that sends data from your website to Google products like Google Ads and Google Analytics. It is the newer name for the global site tag (gtag.js). On a store, it helps measure page visits and conversions from your ads.

Google Tag, Explained

One tag, one tag ID, many destinations. You add the tag to your site once, then link that ID to your Google Ads account and your Analytics property. You do not need a separate tag for each one. Settings you change apply to every connected destination.

The tag can measure conversions and campaign results for Google Ads. In Analytics, it can measure page views, clicks, scrolls and similar actions.

Do not mix it up with Google Tag Manager. That is a separate tool for managing tags. The Google tag is the code itself.

The usual failure on a store is doubling. Say the store has a Google tag from an app, another pasted into the theme, and a third inside a pixel. One order can then fire more than once, and your reports show sales that never happened. Pick one way to install it and take the others out. Then place a test order and count the conversions.

A browser tag also has limits. Ad blockers can stop it from firing, so some real orders never reach Google.

How We Use It at ZenoX

A store with broken tags gets no scaling from us. We fix tracking first, check one test purchase lands once with the right value, and add enhanced conversions on top. We hunt double-firing tags hard, because a doubled sale makes bidding chase numbers that are not real.

Questions People Ask About Google Tag

Is the Google Tag the Same as Google Tag Manager?

No. The Google tag is code on your site that sends data to Google products. Google Tag Manager is a separate tool for adding and managing tags. You can run the tag with or without it, but you should not install the same tracking twice.

Do I Need a Separate Tag for Google Ads and Analytics?

No. The Google tag has one tag ID that you add to your site, and you can connect that ID to several Google products. That means fewer pieces of code on your store and fewer chances of counting the same sale twice.
