What Is PPC?

Also written as pay per click, pay-per-click advertising, PPC advertising.

Definition

PPC means pay per click. It is a kind of online advertising where you pay when someone clicks your ad, not when they just see it. Google Ads is one place to buy it. For an ecommerce store, PPC often means Shopping and Search ads that bring shoppers to product pages.

PPC, Explained

With PPC, you put an ad in front of people and pay for the ones who click. Picture a store selling hiking boots. A shopper searches for waterproof hiking boots, sees the ad and clicks. The store pays for that click. If the shopper scrolls past, there is no charge.

The price is not fixed. On Google, an auction runs for every search and sets what you pay. Your bid matters. So does the quality of your ad and your page. Google says you are often charged less, sometimes much less, than your maximum (checked 5 November 2026).

PPC is a loose word. People use it for all paid search, and often for all paid ads. It is not a perfect fit for Google Ads, because not every campaign bills by the click. Display can bill per 1,000 viewable views. So the safe line is this: with cost-per-click bidding, you pay when someone clicks.

The upside over SEO is speed. Ads can show soon after you launch. The catch is that traffic stops when the budget stops.

Clicks are not the goal. A click costs money. A sale makes money. Track conversions from day one, and judge PPC on the profit it leaves after ad cost and product cost.

How We Use It at ZenoX

PPC for us means Google Ads for ecom stores. We run 400+ ecom stores on the same core: feed-only Performance Max, Standard Shopping for wasters, and brand Search. We do not judge a click on its own. We check orders against the store's real data and read profit, not just cheap traffic.

Questions People Ask About PPC

Is PPC the Same as Google Ads?

Not quite. PPC is the way of paying. Google Ads is one place to buy ads that way. Other ad platforms sell clicks too. Inside Google Ads, not every campaign bills by the click, so PPC is a handy word, not an exact one.

Do You Pay Every Time Someone Sees a PPC Ad?

Not with cost-per-click bidding. There, you pay only when someone clicks your ad and comes to your site. Google says so in its own help pages (checked 5 November 2026). Other bidding works differently. Display, for example, can bill per 1,000 viewable views.
