What Is Audience Targeting?
Also written as audience segments, audiences, custom segments.
Definition
Audience targeting means picking groups of people for your ads based on their interests, recent buying signals, life details or past contact with your business. Google calls these audience segments. For an ecommerce store, it can mean showing a Demand Gen ad to people who are shopping for furniture right now.

Audience Targeting, Explained
Google describes audience segments as groups of people with specific interests, intents and demographic information, "as estimated by Google" (checked 5 November 2026). These groups are Google's best guess, not a list of facts.
Google's main types are:
Affinity is based on what people care about and their habits. In-market is based on recent buying intent. Detailed demographics are long-term life facts. Life events are big moments, like moving home. Your data is people who have dealt with your business, such as past visitors or buyers. Custom segments are ones you build from keywords, URLs and apps.
Say you sell standing desks. An in-market segment for office furniture reaches people shopping around now. A custom segment built from rival store sites reaches people interested in those brands. Your data reaches people who already looked at your desk.
Beginners should know where this applies. A Search or Shopping ad already starts from what someone typed, so the search does most of the work. Audience targeting does more on Demand Gen and YouTube, where nobody typed anything.
In Performance Max, audiences work as signals. Google says Performance Max "may show ads to relevant audiences outside of your signals". So an audience in PMax is a hint. It does not stop anyone else seeing the ad.
How We Use It at ZenoX
We do not lean on audiences for Shopping or feed-only Performance Max. There, the search and the product feed do the job. Audience work starts when a store moves into Demand Gen. We research rivals first, then build custom segments from what we find.
Questions People Ask About Audience Targeting
What Types of Audience Segments Does Google Ads Have?
Google lists affinity, in-market, detailed demographics, life events, your data and custom segments (checked 5 November 2026). Affinity follows interests. In-market follows recent buying intent. Detailed demographics follow long-term life facts. Life events follow big moments, like moving home. Your data covers people who dealt with your business. Custom segments you build from keywords, URLs and apps.
Do Audience Signals Limit Who Sees My Performance Max Ads?
No. Google says Performance Max may show ads to relevant audiences outside of your signals (checked 5 November 2026). Treat a signal as a hint that helps Google start in the right place. If you need a hard limit on who sees an ad, a signal will not give you one.
