What Is Manual CPC?
Also written as manual cost-per-click, manual bidding, Manual CPC bidding.
Definition
Manual CPC is a Google Ads bidding option where you set the most you will pay for a click. Google does not pick the bid for you. A store could bid up to $1 on its own brand keyword and keep that limit fixed.

Manual CPC, Explained
With Manual CPC you pick a maximum cost per click. That number is your max CPC. It is the most you will pay for one click, unless you use bid adjustments or Enhanced CPC. With cost-per-click bidding, you pay only when someone clicks your ad.
You are often charged less than your max. Google says you pay what is minimally required to clear the Ad Rank thresholds and beat the Ad Rank of the ad below you. The gap matters too, so do not read that as a flat one cent more than the next ad.
The upside is control. You decide the price, keyword by keyword or group by group. The cost is work. You do not get the signals Smart Bidding reads at each auction, and you have to watch and change bids yourself.
That is why Manual CPC suits small, predictable jobs. Your own brand keywords are the classic case. Shoppers there already want you, so you just want a fair price for the click. For wide catalogs with thousands of products, a person cannot keep up with Google's auction-level bidding.
Customer Match lists also do not work with manual bidding.
How We Use It at ZenoX
We use Manual CPC on Brand Search on the stores we run. Those clicks should stay cheap and there is no need for bidding to get clever. Our feed campaigns and generic Search run on Maximize Conversion Value, because no person can price a whole catalog by hand.
Questions People Ask About Manual CPC
Will I Always Pay My Maximum Bid with Manual CPC?
No. Google says you are often charged less, sometimes much less, than your maximum. You pay what it takes to clear the Ad Rank thresholds and beat the ad below you. If you use bid adjustments, a click can go above the base bid.
Is Manual CPC Better Than Smart Bidding?
It depends on the job. Manual CPC gives you control and suits small, steady jobs like brand keywords. Smart Bidding reads signals at every auction and suits big catalogs with real sales data. Most stores end up using both in different campaigns.
