What Is Remarketing?
Also written as retargeting, your data segments, your data.
Definition
Remarketing means showing ads to people who already dealt with your business, such as past visitors or buyers. Google now calls it your data. For an ecommerce store, it can show a lamp to someone who viewed that lamp last week and left. It brings warm people back, but it does not find new buyers.

Remarketing, Explained
Most visitors leave without buying. Remarketing brings some of them back. Someone looks at a leather bag on your store, gets distracted and closes the tab. Later, they see an ad for your store while browsing. That is remarketing. Many people call it retargeting, and in everyday talk the two mean the same thing.
Google has renamed it. The help page says "'remarketing' is now referred to as 'your data'" (checked 5 November 2026). Google describes it as a way to "re-engage people who have previously interacted with your brand or services". So look for your data inside your account, not the old word.
For this to work, Google needs a way to know who visited. That comes from your Google tag or from a list you upload.
Watch how you read the results. Remarketing talks to people who were already close to buying. Some would have come back anyway. So its ROAS often looks better than the true extra sales it brought. Heavy remarketing can flatter a whole account.
Do not spend most of the budget here. These lists are small and they run dry. If nobody new comes in at the top, there is nobody left to remarket to.
How We Use It at ZenoX
We treat remarketing as support, not as proof that an account works. Last-click ROAS can be flattered by people who already knew the store. So we check results against real store orders. New buyers from Shopping and Performance Max come first. Remarketing helps them come back.
Questions People Ask About Remarketing
Is Remarketing the Same as Retargeting?
In everyday use, yes. Both mean showing ads to people who already dealt with your business. Inside Google Ads, the word has changed again. Google says remarketing is now referred to as your data (checked 5 November 2026), so look for that name in your account.
Why Does Remarketing ROAS Look So High?
Because these people already knew you, and many were close to buying. Some would have come back without the ad, but the ad still gets credit. Do not read a high number as proof of new sales. Check total store orders when you turn it up or down.
