What Is Google Merchant Center Next?

The short answer

Google Merchant Center Next is the simpler Merchant Center that replaced the classic one, and today it is just called Merchant Center. It is the free Google tool for your product details in Shopping ads and free listings. Every account moved to it in 2024, and Google dropped the "Next" name in July 2026. At ZenoX we still build a real feed for ads.

Where It Came from and Why the Name Is Gone

In August 2024 Google said every retailer would move to Merchant Center Next by September. On 1 October 2024 its help center confirmed it: all merchants were moved. There is no switch back to the classic version.

Then in July 2026 Google posted "Merchant Center Next is now Merchant Center". The "Next" label is coming off the help pages, the emails and the screens. Google says no action is needed, and your account, product data and campaigns stay the same.

So when a guide or a YouTube video says Merchant Center Next, it means the Merchant Center you log into today. A guide that still talks about the Feeds tab or the Diagnostics page may describe the classic version, so check its screens match yours.

What Changed from Classic Merchant Center

Most of the change is new names for old things. Feeds are now called data sources, and you find them under Settings. Destinations are now marketing methods. Diagnostics moved to the Needs attention tab inside Products. That tab is the first place we look when products drop out of Shopping.

Online and in-store products now sit in one product list. Google also added Product Studio, a free set of AI tools for product images. By October 2024 it worked in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan and India.

The other change is the default. Google now adds products it finds on your website on its own, for new and old accounts alike. It scans your site, reads the product data in your page code, and lists the items as "Found by Google". It checks your site at least once every 24 hours. That is handy for a small store. For a store that runs ads, we still want a real feed, because a feed is what you control.

Where Did Feed Rules and Supplemental Feeds Go?

They are still there, just behind a switch. Go to Settings, then Add-ons, then the Discover tab, and turn on Advanced data source management. That turns on attribute rules, the new name for feed rules, plus supplemental data sources and instant preview.

This matters for dropshippers. A supplemental source lets you fix product titles and fill empty fields without touching your Shopify store. We build ours as a Google Sheet matched to each product by its id. It rewrites the titles, descriptions and categories. Price, images and stock stay in the main feed, so the sheet never touches them.

Merchant Center Next Is Not the Merchant API

People mix these up, and the second one can hurt you. Merchant Center Next was the new screen you click in. The Merchant API is the pipe feed apps use to send your products to Google behind the scenes.

The old pipe, the Content API for Shopping, reached its sunset on 18 August 2026. From 1 September 2026, calls to it without an extension start to fail some of the time, and Google plans to shut it down fully in early 2027. You probably never call it yourself. Your feed app does.

So email your feed app and ask which one it uses. A feed that stops updating shows old prices and old stock, and that is how products get disapproved. On our multi-country stores we skip the API link and connect each feed as a file link instead. It has fewer parts that can break.

What to Do with It Now

Nothing, if your products are approved and your feed updates every day. The name change is only a name change.

If you are setting up Merchant Center for the first time or fixing a messy one, learn it step by step for free in our Google Ads eCom Lab on Skool. Members ask questions and help each other there, and our staff jump in when we can. If your store already spends at least €10K a month on ads, our agency team can run Merchant Center and the account for you through our Google Ads dropshipping service.

When you're ready, one call.

On the call, we look at your account live. If we can grow it, we will show you how. If we cannot, we will tell you that too, and point you at someone who can.

We work with brands serious about scale. If that is you, let's talk.
