Are Google Merchant Center Free Listings Worth It?

The short answer
Google Merchant Center free listings are worth it for most stores, because they cost nothing per click. They run off your product feed, the products, prices and photos your store sends Google. With a clean feed, products can show in Shopping, Search, Maps, Images, YouTube and Gemini. You get no bids and no budget. Stuck? Ask in the free eCom Lab ZenoX runs.
What Free Listings Are and Where They Show
Free listings are the unpaid product spots Google builds from your Merchant Center feed. The feed is the product list your store sends Google, with titles, photos and prices. Google's help page, read on 2026-10-09, says they can show at no cost on Google Search, Maps, Gemini, YouTube, the Shopping tab, Images and Lens.
Google announced them on April 21, 2020. The post said the Shopping tab would show mostly free listings, starting in the US before the end of that April, with a global rollout planned before the end of the year.
You can run them without paid ads. In most cases the feature is on by default, and you can check it on the Free listings page in Merchant Center. The feed needs the basics: id, title, description, link, image link, price and availability, plus shipping settings. Some products need more, like brand, GTIN or condition. Apparel also needs color, size, age group and gender.
What Free Listings Can and Cannot Do
The upside is simple. Zero cost per click. If you already run Shopping ads, most of the work is done, because free listings use the same feed. Each product still has to meet the free listings rules to show.
The limit is control. You cannot bid, set a budget or push one product harder than the rest. Google decides when they show. And free listings do not get the spots marked Sponsored. Those belong to paid Shopping ads. So you cannot plan how much traffic free listings will bring, or speed it up.
Want that control? That is what paid Shopping or Performance Max gives you. It is a choice, not a must. Many stores run both, and the free clicks come on top.
Why a Clean Feed Helps Free and Paid
Free listings and Shopping ads run off the same feed. A title that matches what people search can help both. A wrong price hurts both. The policies are close but not the same. On July 15, 2026 Google announced it would put the Shopping ads and free listings policies into one set of Shopping policies in September 2026. Google also said some policies will still only apply to Shopping ads, and it will mark those.
One thing to know before you panic over a Merchant Center warning. A full account suspension stops every product, in ads and in free listings. But some issues only limit free listings while paid ads keep running. In my misrepresentation video I say "in a lot of cases it just affects free listings and you can still continue to run ads normally". Read which program the issue names before you change anything. A panic edit can break ads that still work.
How to See What Free Listings Bring You
Do not guess. Merchant Center reports Shopping ads, free listings and free local listings in one dashboard and splits free from paid with a traffic filter. Google's help page puts it under Analytics, then Your reports. Filter to free listings and you see the clicks you got without paying.
Watch the date if you compare old numbers. Google changed how Merchant Center performance reports count from August 24, 2026, to line them up with Google Ads and YouTube. A jump right around that date can be the report, not your store.
Want a second pair of eyes on your numbers? Post them in our free Google Ads eCom Lab on Skool. If your store spends at least €10K a month on ads and you want a team to run Shopping for you, that is what our Google Ads agency does.
Check, Enable and Measure Google Free Listings
- 1
Check the feed has the basics
Every product needs id, title, description, link, image link, price and availability, plus shipping settings. Add brand, GTIN, condition or apparel details where they apply.
- 2
Confirm free listings are on
Open the Free listings page in Merchant Center. In most cases it is on by default. If it is off, switch it on there.
- 3
Fix what Merchant Center flags
Go to Products, then Needs attention, and fix each named issue at the source. Check which program each issue names, because a product can be limited in free listings and still run in ads, or the other way round.
- 4
Read free and paid traffic side by side
Open Analytics, then Your reports, and use the traffic filter to split free listings from Shopping ads. Keep the August 24, 2026 reporting change in mind when you compare older weeks.
